The Drawing Center: The Nature of the Crime
We’re not just pieces of paper to be processed; we’re not two-dimensional characters in a crime drama. Our lives are complex and our motivations are rich — and yet we become collateral damage in a system built to dehumanize us and continue to punish us even after we have served our allotted time.
A husband tries to provide for his family; a student tries to better his life after being in and out of jail; a parolee losing his metrocard causes a chain of events that undoes his status — the nature of our lives does not fit the nature of our crimes.
This remount of The Nature of the Crime is a part of The Drawing Center's The Pencil is The Key, an exhibition of historical and contemporary drawings by incarcerated people from all over the globe. Works by artists who were or currently are prisoners will be juxtaposed with drawings by prisoners who became artists while incarcerated.
