11am- 1pm ICE OUT A Cops-in-the-Head Workshop

This two-hour workshop adapts the Cops in the Head technique described in Augusto Boal’s The Rainbow of Desire, in which participants investigate the internalized voices of oppression (aka "cops") that block us from taking action. We will focus on internalized anti-immigrant messages, improvise both the “cops” and potential “anti-bodies”, and rehearse tactics so we are collectively prepared to confront and engage them wherever they show up. This technique gives us space to shift out of being frozen, feeling conflicted as a bystander, or experiencing apathy, and align our actions towards our own beliefs (after we evict the cops-in-the-head!). Participants will receive facilitation packets to adapt the exercise to their own spaces. 

Lunch will be provided after the workshop.

Únete a este espacio de juegos interactivos y presentación de escenas de teatro foro con nuestra tropa Escucha. ¡Somos inmigrantes y neoyorkinos! En este taller utilizamos herramientas del Teatro del Oprimido para crear comunidad y ensayar acciones que cambien los sistemas opresivos de detención masiva que buscan despojar de su dignidad a nuestra comunidad de migrantes en Nueva York.

El almuerzo estará disponible a las 13:00, antes del taller.

How does the media/news shape the ways we act in solidarity? This workshop uses group art‑making and Theatre of the Oppressed–inspired activities to help people connect quickly and work together. Through creative play and collaboration, we’ll build community, deepen relationships, and explore practical next steps toward solidarity and collective change.

We’ll start with a full‑group activity, then break into smaller groups to create and share art together. Participants will make blackout poetry/music, drawing/collage, and short performance pieces inspired by newspaper theater and real media headlines. The art will respond to urgent questions, challenges, and needs in our communities.

Whether you’re hoping to meet new collaborators, looking for a way to start taking action, or simply wanting fresh ideas and inspiration, this gathering is a chance to connect, create, and move toward meaningful action together.

¿Cómo influyen los medios de comunicación y las noticias en nuestra forma de actuar solidariamente? Este taller utiliza la creación artística en grupo y actividades inspiradas en el Teatro del Oprimido para ayudar a las personas a conectar rápidamente y trabajar juntas. A través del juego creativo y la colaboración, construiremos comunidad, profundizaremos en las relaciones y exploraremos pasos prácticos hacia la solidaridad y el cambio colectivo.

Comenzaremos con una actividad con todo el grupo y, a continuación, nos dividiremos en grupos más pequeños para crear y compartir arte juntos. Los participantes crearán poesía/música «blackout», dibujos/collages y breves piezas de performance inspiradas en el teatro de periódico y en titulares reales de los medios de comunicación. Las obras responderán a preguntas urgentes, retos y necesidades de nuestras comunidades.

Tanto si esperas conocer a nuevos colaboradores, como si buscas una forma de empezar a actuar, o simplemente quieres ideas frescas e inspiración, este encuentro es una oportunidad para conectar, crear y avanzar juntos hacia una acción significativa.

Cancellation policy: Tickets are non-refundable during the 7 days before the workshop, and may not be credited to a future training. Exceptions will only be considered at TONYC’s discretion.
