Activate 2019: Learning Laboratory!

Come learn all our techniques and tools!

The first half of the day will be an introduction to the work: Play essential games from the arsenal of Theatre of the Oppressed and connect the tools of Theatre of the Oppressed to human rights and oppression as it affects your community through dialogue and brainstorming! Digest what you’ve learned over a networking lunch with TONYC and our various partners throughout New York City, and then participate in a Legislative Theatre demonstration. End the day with food, drinks and, of course, a party!

Agenda for the day!

9am onwards — Registration + Coffee
Arrive early, get registered, and have a nice cup of coffee to start the day.

10am-12:30pm — Morning session(s): Learn how we facilitate!
Participants are introduced to the core techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed, and methods to apply those techniques to developing anti-oppressive approaches to group facilitation. Participants will learn and “teach-back” games and exercises, and receive constructive feedback on their facilitation from TONYC staff.

TONYC Facilitators will share our organization’s framework for evaluating facilitation, which is used by our team of “jokers” to assess our developing methodologies. As a baseline, this framework uses the anti-oppression ethics of Augusto Boal, who developed Theatre of the Oppressed techniques, and Paulo Freire, a collaborator of Boal’s, who wrote The Pedagogy of the Oppressed. This feedback framework supports dialogue with colleagues and participants, encourages thede-mechanization of oppressive hierarchies and stereotypes, and helps facilitators analyze impact. This framework can be used in teaching artist work, theatre directing, group facilitation, and meeting facilitation.

12:45pm-2:45pm — Facili-Taste!
Eat some delicious local food and meet the rest of the attendees, including Theatre of the Oppressed NYC’s partners and advocates! Bring your business cards and what you’re currently working on — this is a time to meet potential new collaborators, get to know the work of like-minded organizations, engage with peers and potential mentors with expertise in different fields, or just make new friends!

3pm-5:30pm — Afternoon Session(s): Putting the ‘demo’ in Democracy!
Mock Legislative Theatre! TONYC actors, jokers, and session participants will go through the steps of a policy-generating Legislative Theatre session. Participants can walk away understanding the basic steps of Legislative Theatre, and tips and tools on how to use LT techniques in their own work.

6pm-9pm — Unrestricted FUN(DS) party
TONYC is closing out Activate 2019 with our UNRESTRICTED FUN(D)S party! You can buy tickets for just the party, or join us for a full day of TONYC workshops. There will be snacks, drinks, and music provided by DJ Proper Edakit.
